Pasta with ketchup.
(Because it's basically just fucking tomato sauce.)

Please boost this, I need to know! Because I'm being BULLIED for my culinary culture!

Show thread

I can't believe that there's at least one German out there who hasn't eaten/heard of pasta with ketchup!
My mind is boggled!

Show thread

@Juju I put ketchup on macaroni and cheese all the time

food, poll

@Juju I’m really, really tempted to answer to this with all of my alt accounts

food, poll

@miramarco Do it. I'm sure as an Italian you have Opinions. 😆

food, poll

@Juju to be precise, "No, but may have eaten it"!

food, poll

@verity Should I have specified that this is not about liking it but just the concept? If it's weird or not?

food, poll

@Juju ahhh. I see where you're coming from!

food, poll

@verity I don't like it either but I'm in an ongoing argument about if it's a weird combinaion or not. I say it's not. It's "mom doesn't want to cook so here's some pasta and ketchup" food. And I need to know it that's just a weird thing literally every family around me did and somewhere else in Germany and around the world it's weird.

food, poll

@Juju Full disclosure, I'm one of the German-wtf-answers. I heard about it once as a kid, I think it must have been in a children's TV show, where a kid said they like it. Even then I thought wtf. I have never met another person who mentioned this meal at all.

My parents' go-to in cases like you describe was pasta (typically thin Spaghetti or Cappellini) with butter and Maggi [Würze].

My parents are south-west-German (Baden, Black Forest) socialised, to add some data. :)

food, poll

@Xjs Goddammit, Jannis!

I've had a Swedish person respond so maybe North and South are divided on this.
Also... butter and Maggi on pasta sounds awful! 😆

food, poll

@Juju Dunno… it's almost certainly just nostalgia, but I kind of still like it in a guilty way. ;)

food, poll

@Xjs It's probably the Maggi, that makes everything better somehow.

food, poll

@Juju (My wife, also kind of from the South of Germany, says she has heard of pasta with ketchup, but never ate it)

food, poll

@Juju I've never seen anyone do this in Germany until I was at least 16. it was a family formerly from the DDR. They were also the first I saw eating pizza with ketchup

@Juju I've heard of it, but it doesn't make sense. Yuck.

@AE35 Well, it's not great but it's a common thing here.
Whereas pasta and cheese sounds absolutely disgusting.

food, poll

@Juju Does German ketchup contain less sugar and vinegar than the British variety? Those tilt it somewhat away from herby-savoury-umami pasta friends, to me.

(So I Wikipedia it. It doesn't say, but I discovered that *mushroom* ketchup used to be popular around here. I am... actually intrigued now en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom)

food, poll

@g1comics I think it has a LOT of sugar but I'm not sure about the vinegar but never mind that. Mushroom ketchup you say? I'm listening!

food, poll

@Juju Never seen it myself, but I'll be looking out for it in the weird condiments aisle of the supermarket soon! The description of the first recipes make it sound very salty and thin, with hints of spices. Modern tastes probably bend it towards ticker, sweetened and more acidic.

Also, wait. Walnut ketchup? Banana ketchup..? Yes please! *salivate*

food, poll

@g1comics Banana ketchup sounds SO GOOD! And it also looks much better than mushroom ketchup. Yikes... But as long as it tastes good 🤷

food, poll

@g1comics @Juju oo we used to have a bottle of mushroom ketchup, it's good! and yeah agreed on the vinegary issue with ketchup, you couldn't really put as much of it on as you'd need to cover pasta without it being very overpowering. But using ketchup as a base and throwing in herbs and such to take that edge off could probably work ok

food, poll

@wolfie @Juju Jack Monroe suggests it as an alternative to tomato purée in some (but not all) of her recipes that call for it in Tin Can Cook. If the acid helps in other ways, it's fine and no need to be posh about it :)

food, poll

@g1comics @Juju oh yeah if you've got a tin of tomatoes ketchup would definitely do a similar job to puree, not sure what you mean about posh?

food, poll

@wolfie @Juju Not using expensive, authentic ingredients when cheaper and more readily available ones would be an OK substitute. It's a major theme of that author's work. Sorry for any confusion.

food, poll

@g1comics @Juju ah ok, I'm not familiar with them 😄

food???

@Juju if ketchup is basically tomato sauce, then mayo is basically egg salad

food, poll

@Juju it is certainly not. wife. lovely, lovely wife. Please come to the US. I will cook for you. I am weeping for your tastebuds rn

food, poll

@ItsJenNotGabby I'm starting to think we have different ketchups. This has been every American's reaction to this so far. xD

food, poll

@Juju In Sweden ketchup is pretty standard for pasta.

food, poll

@habmala AHA! Now we're getting somewhere because it has been mainly Americans going "WHAT NO WHAT THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE" when I talked about it. I mean, I don't _like_ it but it's normal here.

food, poll

@Juju @habmala Spätzle is definitely on my list of things to try. The dishes it's used in hint at a very different pasta culture to the very Italian prototype that most Brits and Americans probably look towards?

food, poll

@Juju I have a friend in Melbourne who does this. But for me, tomato sauce is too sweet, except on a hot dog.

food, poll

@Juju

just tomato sauce ?

Sorry, no.

There are tens of types of tomato sauces, starting with the variety of tomatoes you squash

and then it can be fresh, conserved, meat based, fish based, topped with different odors

Ketchup is not tomato sauce

And pasta with ketchup is an abomination

Sorry

food, poll

@Juju

the good news is that even Germans can learn to make a decent basic pasta with tomato sauce, it doesn't take long and the ingredients are widely available

Do you want my recipe ? 😊

food, poll

@AbbieNormal I do not because I don't eat it. I dislike pasta with ketchup. But it's still a normal thing people around me eat.

food, poll

@Juju

I have heard of other people (german) doing that, but it is absolutely nothing for me!

food, poll

@Juju my wife (German) has eaten this. I (Austrian) continue to be repulsed.

food, poll

@Juju I've definitely had pasta with banana ketchup in the Philippines. It works!

food, poll

@Juju I cry for those who can't differentiate between pasta sauce and ketchup 😢

food, poll

@wmd I'm pretty sure that there are zero people out there who can't differentiate between them.
